Allegory of Death
Allegory of Death
Allegorie van de dood, 1745
Johann Gottfried Haid
Encased in an ornate Rococo frame, the Allegory of Death is a captivating portrayal of mortality. The central figure, a skeleton, balances on one leg atop a globe, clutching a scythe and an hourglass - symbols of time and inevitability. A snake coils around an apple on the globe, hinting at the biblical tale of original sin. To the left, an angel stands in the landscape, brandishing a flaming sword in its right hand while holding the stone tablets in its left. The scene is underscored by four lines of text in both German and Latin, adding depth to the narrative. This piece is number 26 in the publisher's collection.
