Allegory of Man's Good Death
Allegory of Man's Good Death
Allegorie op de goede dood van de mens, 1563
Hieronymus Wierix
A venerable old man lies on his deathbed, his hands clasped in prayer. Standing by his side are Faith (Fides) and Prayer (Oratio). Faith is pointing towards the heavens, while a winged heart ascends from Prayer's mouth. At the foot of the bed, Love (Charitas) is seen distributing money and food to the elderly and children. In the sky, Christ sits on a rainbow, trampling Death and the devil beneath him. Alongside him on the clouds are Wisdom (Sapientia) and Hope (Spes). A four-line poem in Dutch, Latin, and French adorns the margin.
