Allegory of the Power of God
Allegory of the Power of God
Allegorie op de macht van God, 1734
Jan Goeree
A man sits in a chair, deep in contemplation about the power of God. Encircling him are symbols representing both religious life, like an anchor and beehive, and worldly existence, such as a purse of money, crown, compass, and winged hourglass. Behind him, the title of the book is inscribed on a wall. Above him in the sky are the All-Seeing Eye of God and the Hand of God. The Hand holds a scale weighing Good and Evil. In the background, a teacher imparts knowledge to a youth.
