This captivating piece depicts the abdication of Emperor Charles V in Brussels on October 25, 1555. Elevated at the center, Charles V is seated on his throne, flanked by Ferdinand I on his left and Philip II, King of Spain, on his right. Kneeling before Philip are personifications of the territories of the empire, proudly bearing their banners. The foreground presents personified continents - America, Africa, Europe, and Asia - bestowing gifts. To the left, Neptune rides his triumphant chariot pulled by seahorses and accompanied by mermen and mermaids, tritons and more. Atop the chariot rests a globe and two pillars wrapped with a banner inscribed with 'Plus Ultra'.
