Allegory on the Abdication of Emperor Charles V in Brussels

Allegory on the Abdication of Emperor Charles v in Brussels, 1635
Frans Francken (II)

This captivating artwork captures the momentous occasion of Emperor Charles V's abdication on October 25, 1555, in Brussels. The painting is rich with symbolism and narrative. At the top center, Charles V is depicted seated on his throne, flanked by Ferdinand I on his left and Philip II, King of Spain, on his right. In front of Philip, personifications of the empire's territories kneel bearing flags. In the foreground, allegorical representations of continents - America, Africa, Europe, and Asia - present their gifts. Adding a mythical touch to the scene, Neptune is portrayed on his triumphal chariot pulled by seahorses, surrounded by mermen and mermaids, tritons and more. A globe and two pillars with a banner inscribed 'Plus Ultra' adorn the chariot.
