Allegory on the French Invasion of 1672

Allegory on the French Invasion of 1672

Allegory on the French Invasion of 1672, 1672
Johannes van Wijckersloot

This artwork is a powerful allegory depicting the French invasion of the Netherlands in the catastrophic year of 1672. It portrays a young man, full of mirth, showing a seated man with a cap, a paper or print. The image on the paper is striking - a crowing French rooster towers over the Dutch Garden, where the defeated Dutch lion lies, its sword shattered, its arrows scattered and its fence trampled underfoot. The bottom of the painting features a musical score.
