anonymous
This captivating piece is a diagram of a compass rose, featuring terms for all wind directions presented in six languages. Each corner is adorned with the faces of the blowing winds, while at the center sits a sun with a French lily. Marked as number 49, this piece is part of the first of two sections of the print work 'Les costes de France et d'Espagne', or part 13 of 'Les Forces de l'Europe, Asie, Afrique et Amerique', published around 1702. The entire work comprises 43 marked plates depicting the coasts of France and Spain, created in the context of the War of Spanish Succession. These plates are copies of anonymous French plates originally issued by Nicolas de Fer in Paris.
