Windroos, ca. 1702, 1702
anonymous
This captivating piece is a diagram of a compass rose, displaying all cardinal directions and corresponding terms in six languages. The four corners feature the faces of wind gods, blowing gusts across the chart. At the center of the compass rose, a sun is adorned with a French lily, symbolizing royalty and perfection. Marked as number 49, this piece is part of the first of two parts from the print work: 'The Coasts of France and Spain' (or part 13 of 'The Forces of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America'), published around 1702. The print work consists of 43 marked plates depicting the coastlines of France and Spain during the War of Spanish Succession. These plates are copies of anonymous French plates originally published by Nicolas de Fer in Paris.
