Death of Adam and Eve
Death of Adam and Eve
Dood van Adam en Eva, 1548
Jan Ditmaer
In a dramatic scene, Adam and Eve are depicted lying amid serpents, meeting their end at the hands of Death, who is armed with arrows. Above them hovers a snake in the form of a woman, clutching an apple, symbolizing temptation and sin. In a powerful display of victory over evil, Christ, brandishing a cross banner, is seen crushing a devil underfoot amidst the flames of hell. Accompanying the artwork are Biblical references in Latin and Dutch from Genesis 3 and Matthew 28.
