Dialogue between Man and Religion, circa 1578

Dialogue between Man and Religion, circa 1578

Dialoog tussen Mens en Religie, ca. 1578, 1577
Wierix

This striking piece captures the radiant personification of Religion, depicted with wings, triumphantly stepping on Death, portrayed as a skeleton with a scythe and one leg in the grave. Religion leans on a wooden cross and in one hand holds an open book, signifying the Gospel of Peace, while in the other hand she holds a bridle. The backdrop is a landscape ravaged by war. The artwork is complemented by a dialogue in the form of question and answer between Man and Religion, presented in three columns in Dutch, Latin, and French.
