The painting vividly captures a dramatic scene from the evening of May 9, 1787, on the Vaartse Rijn near Jutphaas. At ten o'clock, a fierce firefight broke out between the Utrecht patriots on the right and the city holder's troops on the left. The patriots, both standing and operating cannons, unleashed a barrage of fire upon the Amersfoort Prince-biased troops. The aftermath of the battle is grimly depicted with casualties - dead and wounded soldiers - strewn across the ground.
