French Atrocities in Bodegraven and Zwammerdam, 1672
About this piece
Representation of the atrocities committed by French troops in the Dutch villages of Bodegraven and Zwammerdam at the end of December 1672. The title is held aloft by personifications of War and French Cruelty. To the left, the burning village of Zwammerdam with its drawbridge is depicted. In the foreground, scenes of rape, torture, and murder are vividly portrayed. The scene is framed in an octagonal border entwined with thorns and crowned with a skull. Below the illustration is a detailed description of the events in four columns of Dutch text. Part of this description, the 'Extract,' was written by A.T. Verduyn.
