Hell and Purgatory (lower right section)

Hell and Purgatory (lower right section)

Hel en vagevuur (deel rechtsonder), 1612
Jacques Callot

This is the fourth section (lower right) of a depiction of Hell as an enclosed, gradually constructed pyramid. At the very top, Satan devours the souls of sinners, while on the layers beneath him, countless damned souls are tormented by demonic creatures and fire pits. In the lower right corner outside the pyramid, there's a rock. Scattered throughout the scene are explanatory Latin texts, including descriptions of various sins. Below the scene lies (a part of) the Medici coat of arms and a framed text in Italian.
