Hercules Saving Deianira from Nessus

Hercules Saving Deianira from Nessus

Hercules redt Deïanira van Nessus, 1550
Heinrich Aldegrever

This striking piece showcases Hercules standing by the riverbank, a bow held firmly in his left hand. Across the river, the centaur Nessus, depicted here as a satyr, sits with an arrow shot by Hercules lodged in his side. Next to him stands Deianira, completely nude, clutching a cloak in her hands. A two-line Latin text is inscribed beneath the scene. This is the eleventh print in a series of thirteen that illustrates the labors of Hercules.
