This vibrant oil painting captures the grand procession of Francis, Duke of Anjou (1556-1584) entering Antwerp on 19th February 1582. The Duke, draped in a scarlet cloak and riding a white horse, is sheltered under a carried canopy. A colorful parade of horsemen and foot soldiers march towards an ornamental archway, flanked by local militia standing guard for the public. The scene also features a captain kneeling before the Duke in respect. To the right, nestled beside a block of houses, the port of Antwerp can be seen, along with a structure adorned with burning barrels.
