Papal Pyramid
Papal Pyramid
Paapse piramide, 1597
Hendrick Hondius (I)
Created in 1612, 'Papal Pyramid' is a striking portrayal of the Catholic Church as a pyramid formed by a large serpent symbolizing the papacy, and numerous smaller snakes representing other elements of the church. Two small snakes are identified as Loyola and Father Johannes de Gouda. The Word of God emerges from a thundercloud in the top left corner. Scattered on the ground are various objects from the Roman Catholic Church. Inscriptions in Latin and Dutch are found within the scene, with a caption of two columns, each with ten lines in French and Dutch. This piece serves as a satirical commentary on the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church, dating back to circa 1560.
