Papal Pyramid

Papal Pyramid

Paapse piramide, 1597
Hendrick Hondius (I)

Dated 1612, 'Papal Pyramid' is a striking representation of the Papacy and various elements of the Catholic Church, depicted as a large serpent and numerous smaller snakes respectively. Two little snakes are identified as Loyola and Father Johannes de Gouda. Above left, the Word of God emerges from a thundercloud. The ground is scattered with various objects from the Roman Church. The artwork features inscriptions in Latin and Dutch, along with a caption of two columns each with 10 lines in French and Dutch. This piece serves as a satirical commentary on the Pope and the Roman Church, circa 1560.
