Plaque with a Chinoiserie Landscape and Gilt Details

Plaque with a Chinoiserie landscape and gilt details, 1680
anonymous

This rectangular faience plaque, painted in blue and gold on white tin glaze, presents a captivating chinoiserie scene. The tableau unfolds in a vast riverside landscape where Chinese figures gather around a table, watching mice and rats dance. Two men in the center pierce an upside-down wicker basket with their swords, while another man balances on a bamboo pole held by a man at his waist. Behind them, a crowned man with a spear over his shoulder observes. To the right, a dog and several boats carrying people add life to the scene. Far right, two figures ascend a sloping path. In the foreground, large leaves and birds enrich the view, while to the left, a walled city with pagodas completes the picturesque panorama.
