Second Day of Creation: Separation of Waters
Second Day of Creation: Separation of Waters
Tweede scheppingsdag: scheiding tussen de wateren, 1589
Jan Harmensz. Muller
This captivating piece depicts the second day of creation, where an angel, bearing the four winds upon his head, separates the celestial waters from the earthly waters. The celestial water is personified by a woman holding a jug from which water flows, and in her other hand, she holds a rainbow. The earthly water is represented by a river god with a jug pouring out water and shells adorning his head. This artwork draws its inspiration from Genesis 1:6-8 in the Bible.
