Second Intermezzo: Hellish Creatures Prepare to Avenge Circe
Second Intermezzo: Hellish Creatures Prepare to Avenge Circe
Tweede intermezzo: helse wezens maken zich op om Circe te wreken, 1617
Jacques Callot
In a stage setting of burning ruins and towers (a representation of hell), a large devil takes center stage, flanked by two smaller ones in the foreground. Behind them, demons are arranged in two rows on both sides, with numerous devilish creatures scattered in the air, on the water, and on the buildings in the background. Below the scene is a line of Italian text. This print is part of a series of three depictions of intermezzi in Andrea Salvadori's play 'La Liberazione di Tirenno, e d'Arnea', as performed during the Carnival celebration in Florence in 1616.
