Sol

Sol

Sol, 1592
Hendrick Goltzius

Behold Sol, the embodiment of the sun, majestically standing in a niche. In his right hand, he holds a lyre, a symbol of his divine power over music and arts. His left hand cradles a bow, while a quiver full of arrows rests over his shoulder, signifying his might and prowess. This print is part of an exquisite series of eight prints depicting classical gods. These masterpieces were inspired by the paintings of Polidoro da Caravaggio, adorning the facade of a Roman house. The renowned Dutch artist, Hendrick Goltzius, had the privilege to witness these awe-inspiring works during his visit to Rome and decided to recreate them in his own unique style.
