Temptation of Saint Anthony

Temptation of Saint Anthony

Verzoeking van de H. Antonius, 1500
anonymous

Saint Anthony lies on his back on the ground in front of a cave, surrounded by menacing, devilish creatures flying above his head. A beam of light streams from Anthony towards the sky, bearing the inscription: 'Ubi eras bone Jesu? Ubi eras? Etc...'. A second ray of light from the heavens reaches down to touch the saint's body, inscribed with the words: 'Antoni, hic eram, sed expectabam videre certamen tuum.' On the ground lay a staff and a bell, while a pig can be seen to the right.
