The Arrest of Diponegoro by Lieutenant General De Kock

The Arrest of Diponegoro by Lieutenant General De Kock, 1830
Nicolaas Pieneman

This poignant scene captures the moment when Prince Diponegoro, after his arrest, is handed over to Major François de Stuers by Lieutenant General Hendrik Merkus de Kock on March 28, 1830. The arrest had recently taken place at the official residence of the Resident of Kedu in Magelang, Central Java, depicted on the right side of the painting. On the left, Dutch soldiers and the carriage that will transport the prince under Major De Stuers' escort are visible. In the foreground, the prince's followers are seen, their weapons abandoned on the ground.
