The Battle of Waterloo
The Battle of Waterloo, 1824
Jan Willem Pieneman
The Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815, is brought vividly to life in this painting. The scene captures the moment when the English commander Wellington hears that Prussian reinforcements are on their way. To the left, we see the injured Prince William of Orange being carried off the battlefield. Commanders and officers on horseback stand in the center while wounded and dead soldiers lie to the right. The raging battles form a dramatic backdrop to this scene. The painting also features portraits of notable figures such as Lieutenant-General Lord Uxbridge, Sir Rowland Hill, Staff Colonel Sir William Delancey, Major-General George Cooke, Colonel Harvey, and Colonel Campbell among others.
