The Cutting of the Stone
The Cutting of the Stone
Het snijden van de kei, 1596
Johann Theodor de Bry
Master Blaesckake is immersed in the 'surgical' procedure of extracting a stone from a seated man's head. Through the open door, another patient - a struggling woman - is brought in. The room is filled with various instruments and already 'cut stones', hinting at the peculiar practices taking place here. Rather than curing one's folly through retorts and bloodletting, a small 'operation' is performed to remove the stone, and with it, the foolishness from the patient's mind.
