The Folly of Greed and Avarice
The Folly of Greed and Avarice
About this piece
A fool in his office hands a well-filled purse to a winged dog. The fool stands on a scale, thus trampling justice underfoot. Behind him stands a demon with a bow and arrow, blindfolded, symbolizing the sinful love of money. Surrounding the image is a cartouche where the personification of Fraud sits, depicted with two faces. With two fishing rods, she entices people to desire knowledge (books) and wealth. The print features a Latin inscription warning of the dangers of greed.
