The Folly of Greed and Avarice
About this piece
A fool stands in his office, handing a well-filled purse to a winged dog. The fool is standing on a scale, symbolizing his disregard for justice. Behind him, a demon with a blindfold, bow, and arrow represents the sinful love of money. Surrounding the scene is a cartouche, on which the personification of Fraud sits. She has two faces and uses two fishing rods to lure people towards knowledge (books) and money. The engraving includes a Latin inscription warning about the dangers of greed.
