The Gluttonous Monster and the Good Husband
The Gluttonous Monster and the Good Husband
About this piece
In this captivating scene from around 1550, a grotesque monster devours a man. Kneeling before the beast is a man named 'Good Brother,' accompanied by his wife, referred to as 'Devil.' The monster grows fat solely by consuming men who treat their wives well. Surrounding this central image are various scenes of couples fighting, with particularly irate women. In the background, a procession of men can be seen.
