This chilling painting depicts the brutal end of Johan de Witt and Cornelis de Witt, who were gruesomely executed and their bodies displayed on a gallows at Groene Zoodje on Vijverberg in The Hague, on August 20th, 1672. To the right of the scene, a man holds a torch, casting an eerie glow over the horrific spectacle.
