The Planet Saturn and His Children

The Planet Saturn and His Children

De planeet Saturnus en zijn kinderen, 1646
Harmen Jansz Muller

In the celestial heavens, Saturn rides his chariot, pulled by two fierce dragons. In a shocking display of power, he devours one of his own offspring. The symbols of Capricorn and Aquarius hint at those under Saturn's influence - individuals born under these star signs, who are said to suffer poor health and unfortunate ends. To the left, impoverished children, a beggar on crutches, a pilgrim, and a famished woman receive sustenance from charitable monks. On the right, prisoners receive a visit from a man. The background scene illustrates the land being worked upon. At the bottom margin, there's a Latin text discussing Saturn's children. This print is part of an album.
