About this piece
A majestic rhinoceros stands proudly in a lush landscape. To the left, a man of African descent is depicted with a bow and arrow, adding a sense of adventure and intrigue to the scene. This remarkable rhinoceros, named Clara, was captured in 1738 and sold to VOC captain Douwe Mout in 1740. From 1746 onwards, Clara toured Europe, captivating audiences everywhere she went. The painting includes a German inscription.
