About this piece

A majestic rhinoceros stands proudly against a lush landscape. To the left, a man of African descent is depicted with a bow and arrow. This rhinoceros, named Clara, was captured in 1738 and sold to VOC captain Douwe Mout in 1740. From 1746 onwards, Clara was showcased to the European public. This painting includes a German inscription.
