The Rise and Fall of the De Witt Brothers, 1675
About this piece
This 1675 print reflects on the rise and fall of the De Witt brothers, Johan and Cornelis. Central to the artwork is a portrait of the two men standing before a sacrificial pyre from which a phoenix emerges, symbolizing rebirth. Surrounding this central image are sixteen smaller scenes depicting significant events in their lives. The print is accompanied by the text 'Op en Ondergangh der Heeren Cornelis en Jan de Wit.' This piece serves as a counterpart to Romeyn de Hooghe's 'Orangien Wonderspiegel,' also from 1675.
