The Rise and Fall of the De Witt Brothers, 1675
About this piece
This 1675 print reflects on the rise and fall of the De Witt brothers. At the center, a portrait of the two men stands before a sacrificial fire from which a phoenix emerges. Surrounding this central image are sixteen smaller scenes depicting key events in the lives of Johan and Cornelis de Witt. The print is accompanied by the text 'Rise and Fall of the Lords Cornelis and Jan de Wit.' This piece is a counterpart to Romeyn de Hooghe's 'Orangien Wonderspiegel,' also from 1675.
