About this work of art

About this piece

The Roman Roffelpot. A satirical depiction of the losses suffered by the Pope and Emperor Ferdinand II, contrasted with the gains of Frederick, King of Bohemia. The Elector of Saxony pulls a cart carrying a cage with a plucked eagle, on top of which sits the Pope playing a hurdy-gurdy. A group of musicians accompanies them, including the emperor, a Jesuit, and Spinola. To the left, Frederick has feathers sewn onto his cloak, while on the right, visitors at an inn discuss these events. The print includes a separate text sheet featuring a conversation between two farmers and a bookseller, along with a legend labeled A-O in three columns in Dutch.
