Gathered around a table adorned with a Persian rug, the sampling officials of the Amsterdam Drapers’ Guild, known as 'The Syndics', examine their open sample book. Depicted from left to right are Jacob van Loon (1595-1674), Volckert Jansz (1605/10-1681), Willem van Doeyenburg (c. 1616-1687), the assistant Frans Hendricksz Bel (1629-1701), Aernout van der Mye (c. 1625-1681), and Jochem de Neve (1629-1681). Above the fireplace on the right hangs a painting of a burning beacon.
