About this piece
This detailed artwork captures the Siege of Groningen between July and August 1672. At the top, a map of the city illustrates the positions of the besieging troops. The center features an intricate map of the city and its immediate surroundings, depicted on a lion's skin and flanked by allegorical figures representing Prudence and Strength. Below this, a dramatic scene shows Groningen under heavy fire. Accompanying these vivid depictions is a four-column text detailing the events, complete with legends A-T and 1-17.
