The Wheel of Fortune, ca. 1689
The Wheel of Fortune, ca. 1689
Het rad van fortuin, ca. 1689, 1689
Romeyn de Hooghe
This satirical piece from around 1689 depicts the downfall of Catholic monarchs James II and Louis XIV. Atop the wheel are Emperor Leopold I and King Charles II of Spain, with the Dutch Maiden on the rise. Louis XIV, the dauphin, and the Turks are seen falling from the wheel. At the bottom, James II is depicted with an illegitimate child. The wheel is turned by Mars and Chronos. Below the scene, a key explaining numbers 1-47 and a poem in Dutch further illuminate the piece.
