Throne of Justice
Throne of Justice
Troon van Rechtvaardigheid, 1606
Willem Isaacsz. van Swanenburg
The painting, 'Throne of Justice', is a captivating tableau centered around a monumental structure, ornately decorated with the title cartouche. Various figures symbolizing elements of justice surround this structure. At the heart of the scene is a judge, seated with his staff and law books, literally on the throne of justice. Nestled in the alcoves to the left and right are King David with his harp, and King Solomon. Above them all sits Justice herself, armed with a sword and scales. Flanking her are Moses holding the tablets of law, representing the Old Covenant, and Christ with a cross and a heart bearing his monogram, signifying the New Covenant. In the bottom left corner sits Judge Otanes with his father Sisamnes' skin, while in the bottom right corner Zaleucus' eye is being gouged out.
