Throne of Justice
Throne of Justice
Troon van Rechtvaardigheid, 1606
Willem Isaacsz. van Swanenburg
The artwork features a magnificent architectural structure adorned with an ornamental cartouche titled 'Throne of Justice'. Various figures associated with the judiciary are present, with the central figure being a judge seated on the throne, surrounded by law books and a staff. In the niches to the left and right, we find King David with his harp and King Solomon. Above them, Justice is personified, wielding a sword and scales. She is flanked by Moses, holding the tablets of law representing the Old Covenant, and Christ bearing a cross and a heart with his monogram symbolizing the New Covenant. In the lower left corner sits Judge Otanes with his father Sisamnes' skin, while in the lower right, Zaleucus' eye is being gouged out.
