About this work of art

About this piece

This painting captures the moment Prince William III takes the oath of loyalty as Captain-General of the Dutch Armed Forces. He stands before Gaspar Fagel, the clerk of the States General. Behind them, a curtain displays an image of the Dutch Maiden in the Holland Garden, flanked by columns with portrait busts of William of Orange, Prince Maurice, Frederick Henry, and William II. In the background, two smaller scenes depict a banquet and fireworks celebrating the prince's appointment. Below the main scene, printed text in three columns describes the swearing-in ceremony and the feast, along with a seating plan and an explanation of the depiction.
