Woman in Peasant Costume, 1650
Gerard ter Borch (II)
Gerard ter Borch (II) likely painted his half-sister, Gesina ter Borch (1631-1690), who was also an artist and often served as his model. In the 17th century, her braided updo and red headband would have immediately identified her as an unmarried farmer's daughter. She is depicted holding a printed sheet of paper, momentarily distracted from her reading.
